Betong District (Amphoe Betong) with an area of 1,328 sq. km, is part of the Yala Province in Thailand. The Yala Province has eight districts (amphoe – namely Mueang Yala, Betong, Bannang Sata, Than To, Yaha, Raman, Kabang & Krong Pinang), which are further subdivided into 56 sub-districts (tambon) and 341 villages (muban). Betong District itself has 5 sub-districts, namely Betong (เทศบาลเมืองเบตง), Than Nam Thip (เทศบาลตำบลธารน้ำทิพย์), Yarom (องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบลยะรม), Tano Maero (องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบลตาเนาะแมเราะ) and Aiyoeweng (องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบลอัยเยอร์เวง) plus 32 villages. Normally, I’ll just have a day trip to the Betong Town (Tambon Betong – 78 sq. km) for a quick fix of Thai cuisine, beverages and replenishing more Thai snacks but this time I’ve decided to stay over a night to check out the night activities. Thus, I’ve decided to check into the Modern Thai Hotel as it’s strategically located in the center of most attractions. The best part is that most of the places of interest are within walking distance. However, do take note that this would be one of those hotels in Thailand, which would hold your passport for safe-keeping. So, do print a photocopy of your passport for your own keeping in case needed by authorities.
The Modern Thai Hotel is just a simple 78 rooms hotel with basically a café, Modern Café, to cater for your basic room service needs. There would be the indoor dining area or the al fresco area for you to chill out with a 2-piece band to entertain you on certain weekends.
The rooms consist of Standard (18 rooms – THB690/RM79), Deluxe-Single (9 rooms – THB890/RM99), Deluxe-Twin (48 rooms – THB890/RM99) and Suite (3 rooms – THB1490/RM159). An extra bed can also be requested at THB300/RM39 but it’s advisable to request only for Suites or Deluxe-Single rooms.
Unless you are checking into the Suite which is double in built-up area and has some extra facilities such as a working table, sofa, tea-table and bathtub, the rest of the rooms might differ with basic items such as towels, refrigerator, electric water kettle (complimentary coffee & tea sachets, bottles of drinking water and snacks daily), TV, DVD player, safe deposit box, dressing table, built-in wardrobe, hairdryer and hot/cold showers. Moreover, the washroom came equipped with hair shampoo, body shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, and cotton buds. Thus, bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste.
Overall, it’s a clean place to stay if you do not want to drive all the way back to Malaysia as the roads could be rather dark, hilly and bumpy, especially along the Pengkalan Hulu-Baling stretch. Moreover, I love the extra service from the hotel in providing FREE CAR WASH to its customers. It’s quite hard to avoid being “bombed” with so many thousands of birds sleeping on the electric cables above nightly. Haha!
